"We Are the World" es una canción emblemática lanzada en 1985 con el propósito de recaudar fondos para combatir la hambruna en Etiopía. Fue escrita por Michael Jackson y Lionel Richie, producida por Quincy Jones, y grabada por el supergrupo USA for Africa, que reunió a 43 de los artistas más destacados de la época, a los que hay que añadir a Quincy y a Ken Kragen.

La idea surgió del cantante y activista Harry Belafonte, inspirado por el éxito de la canción británica "Do They Know It's Christmas?" de Band Aid. Belafonte quería replicar este modelo en Estados Unidos para recaudar fondos destinados a África. Con la ayuda del mánager Ken Kragen, se organizó el proyecto, y se convocó a artistas como Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Tina Turner, Cyndi Lauper, entre otros.

We Are the World" es una canción icónica con un poderoso mensaje de unidad y solidaridad global. La letra aborda temas como la unión de la humanidad en tiempos de necesidad, la importancia de ayudar a los demás, el poder del amor y la compasión, y la responsabilidad compartida de crear un mundo mejor. El estribillo, que se repite varias veces, enfatiza que "somos el mundo" y "somos los niños", haciendo hincapié en nuestra responsabilidad colectiva.

La canción alterna entre versos que describen los desafíos que enfrenta el mundo y coros inspiradores que llaman a la acción. Incluye párrafos sobre lo que podemos hacer para ayudar y cómo lo que hagamos puede salvar vidas. Todos somos parte de una gran familia global, que debemos de estar unidos y actuar juntos contra el hambre en el mundo, y que la fuerza  surge cuando las personas se unen por una causa común. A mi personalmente es la canción que siempre me hace llorar de emoción porque me llega al corazón.

Es importante notar que esta canción, lanzada en 1985, sigue siendo relevante hoy en día, no solo por su maravillosa música, sino por el mensaje que transmite,especialmente en los momentos de crisis global. Su mensaje de empatía y unidad a través de la música continúa resonando con las audiencias, incluso en el año 2025.

Michael Jackson y Lionel Richie escribieron la canción en una semana en la casa familiar de los Jacksons. La grabación tuvo lugar el 28 de enero de 1985 en los estudios A&M en Los Ángeles. Quincy Jones lideró la producción e impuso estrictas reglas para garantizar un ambiente colaborativo entre las estrellas presentes. La canción ha batido todos los records de audición, de visualización y de beneficios, y es la obra maestra de la música moderna, estando presente en todos los Top Ten conocidos.

• La canción generó más de 80 millones de dólares destinados a ayuda humanitaria.
• Vendió 7.5 millones de copias solo en Estados Unidos y alcanzó el número uno en las listas de ventas durante varias semanas.
